INTRODUCTION

My art education was academic and traditional and included many years of drawing and painting the human figure.   Beginning at age twelve I attended Saturday children's classes for several years at New York's Art Students League, and later two years of anatomy with Robert Beverly Hale, (in both classes we drew from nude models).   In 1950, I enrolled as a full time student at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna to study etching with Giorgio Morandi and in painting classes with Virgilio Guidi and Pompilio Mandelli we worked from live models.  Coursework also included anatomical drawing and observation of dissections at the university hospital morgue (where these sessions were always held right after lunch).  My background in anatomy and the years of studying the figure was valuable nevertheless, as it did teach me the discipline of seeking out the inner structure that exists everywhere and in everything.  In 1954 I wrote my thesis in Italian on "Il trecento e il cubismo," ("The Fourteenth Century and Cubism") and graduated from the Accademia that year.
